Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are a Major League Baseball team located in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are one of the five teams in East Division of the American League. The Red Sox were one of the American League’s most powerful teams in the early part of the 20th century. Baseball Legends Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker and Cy Young helped Boston win six pennants and five World Series titles from 1903 to 1918. Twice the Red Sox played American League tiebreakers, both times at Fenway Park. They tied Cleveland for the 1948 pennant, only to be clobbered 8-3 in the playoff game.

They also tied the Yankees for the 1978 Eastern Division titles only to lose an excruciating 5-4 game at Fenway. The Red Sox Purchased the contract of outfielder Ted Williams in 1939, then playing in the Pacific Coast League. Ted Williams was perhaps the most obsessive hitter in a baseball history, and is generally considered the greatest hitter of all time because of his ability to hit for both power and average. With Williams, the Red Sox went to the World Series in 1946, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. Finally in 2004, the Red Sox reached the Promised Land in spectacular fashion.

Led by ace Curt Schilling and sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, they won the franchise’s eleventh pennant in 2004 by becoming the first baseball team to ever win a seven game post season series after being down 3-0, the win came against their main rival the Yankees. The Red Sox then destroyed the Cardinals in four straight in the World Series to raise their sixth World Championship title. Overall, the Boston Red Sox has won 6 World Series titles, eleven American League Pennants, five East Division titles and five Wild card berths. The Red Sox enter 2006 the season with a revamped roster, carrying only three positional starters from their 2004 championship squad.

On January 2006 Bronson Arroyo had accepted a three-year contract, but then traded to the Reds for Pena. Theo Epstein would be rejoining the Red Sox. Mota, Marte, catching prospect Kelly Shppach and another player to be named later were traded to the Cleveland Indians for center fielder Coco Crisp, relief pitcher David Riske, and backup catcher Josh Bard. Venezuela shortstop Alex Gonzalez signed a one year contract to replace Renteria. Pitcher Arroyo was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for young slugging outfielder Wily, Mo Pena.
